This weekend saw that start of the triathlon season which came in with an almighty bang at Grafham water. The event was the World Standard distance qualifier held by the superb Nicetri Events Team. The previous weeks before many competitors and club members were fearing a cold swim followed by frozen hands on the bike leg. However with unprecedented temperatures the race was held in beautiful blazing conditions.
The event drew the highest talent of UK age group triathletes who were all aiming to qualify for GB and race in Mexico later this year. The event was also the standard distance British championship for 2016 meaning all the athletes were racing to be crowned national champion for their age group.
Nicetri member Rebecca Layland had a great race with a really strong swim and bike leg meaning she came second in her age group and claiming a silver medal for the British standard championship.
Kyle Chesterman was racing in the male 25-29 age group which was arguably the hardest group to compete in. Kyle had a strong swim and fast bike leg and came a respectable 24th.
Paul Newell raced in the 50-54 age group and came home in P39. Nicetri members Andy Neeves and Jeremy Hill also raced in same the age group and had a very close race coming in P43 and 45. Andy was really please with his times as he managed a sub 3 split which was his goal. He said the run was awful due to the high temperatures but was thankful for the Nicetri team who kept refuelling him through the run.
